Hertford 2030: our vision for the next decade and beyond

In 2021, we asked our students, staff, and alumni why Hertford is such a special place to live and learn. Their answers gave us Hertford 2030, our aspirations for the period ahead.

Our Vision

The pandemic threw many challenges at our college community. But it also gave us the opportunity to reflect, and think about our next chapter. Time and time again, our conversations returned to what makes Hertford such a special place to live and learn, such a supportive community in which to work and teach. How do we preserve and build on that?

Bringing together students, tutors, alumni and staff, these discussions helped us identify several strategic priorities for the years ahead. Together, we hope to create a college that we can all be proud of, a college that leads the way in Oxford and beyond, and that welcomes new people and new ideas for many decades to come.

Our Priorities

Hertford 2030 is about being a frontline for a better society, which we aspire to achieve through four strategic priorities: excellent teaching and research; pioneering programmes in access and sustainability; a commitment to building a community of learners that prepares people for life, work and citizenship; all supported by superb facilities. These priorities are underpinned by a sustained fundraising campaign which will enable everything we do. The commitment and generosity of our donors will ensure that everyone has the same opportunities to study at Hertford, and will preserve everything that our community holds dear.

Our Goals

We structure our fundraising through four streams, each with an annual target. Whilst in recent years our aim has been to raise a total of £1m annually, our ambition now is to more than double this figure, allowing us to plan with more confidence for the future and increase our support for students and Fellows. This represents a real step change in Hertford’s fundraising and can be achieved only with broad support across our alumni community.

Outside of our four main funds, from time to time we seek support for larger, strategic projects through focused multi-year campaigns, such as our current major campaign to refurbish and extend the college library.

We are always happy to discuss ways to support the college. If you have an idea of how we can secure your particular passion at Hertford, please get in touch with a member of the Development team to talk more.
